Oregon Prison Project
In 2009 Rose City NVC partnered with The Oregon Prison Project (OPP). OPP is non-profit 501c3 who’s mission is to support peaceful and thriving communities by sharing NVC with incarcerated folks living in Oregon correctional facilities. We have supported this project over the last 13 years with a team of over 30 volunteer trainers and 2 CNVC Certified Trainer volunteers. Together, our organizations are supporting a healthier, safer reintegration into the community for those formerly in custody by:
- Providing weekly NVC classes in five Oregon prisons and one post-release program to approximately 200 incarcerated persons and persons leaving prison annually.
- Providing a supervised practicum through which volunteers can become trained in teaching NVC. These teachers can then go on to bring NVC into schools and other areas where NVC can be effective in building tools for non-violence, helping prevent crime before it happens.
- Providing the opportunity for incarcerated persons to become peer trainers and develop leadership abilities and the skills to teach NVC in their own communities.
(Facilities closed their doors to Volunteers the last couple years due to the pandemic, and we are now excitedly starting up our programs again!)
Research has shown that NVC training increases Empathy, and has also shown that any increase in empathy increases prosocial behavior and decreases aggressive behavior, resulting in reduced violence and reduced violent crime.
